High Summer Read a Thon July 16 – 22

High Summer Read a Thon!

Yet another reason to read! And after last week’s reading debacle I am completely looking forward to this week, and since it is a full week, although more laid back than other read a thons, I am going to spend quite a bit of time reading!

**Updates for my read a thon!**

  • Patient Zero by Jonathan Maberry
  • Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger
  • Frozen by Mary Casanova
  • A Small Town Near Auschwitz by Mary Fulbrook(Arc received by Oxford University Press)
  • The Gunslinger by Stephen King

Quite the list there I know. I have Patient Zero just staring at me waiting to be read, plus my hubby has been pushing me to read that and The Gunslinger. Although I’m a Stephen King fan I have not read any of that series, so it’s an ongoing debate with myself. I started Soulless and have been loving it! On page 100 and plan to finish that before I pick anything else up! And of course 50 Shades of Grey. Yet another trilogy that I have not taken the time to read, I am going to finally do it!

And now onto the stuff that is even better than reading… GIVE AWAYS! ** Open to International residents also! **

Mini challenge!

*** Open until the end of the High Summer RaT ***

Based on Page 99 Test! Haven’t heard of it? It’s a simple test to pick up the book you’re interested in, turn to page 99 and read what is there. Do you now want to turn to 100 or would you rather put the book down?

The Mini challenge is going to be a twist on this test. Instead of asking ourselves if we want to buy the book, especially since most of us already own the books we’re reading for the Summer Read a Thon, we’re going to:

  • Pick a book that you have on your to read list this week.
  • Turn to page 99.
  • Read page 99!
  • Now, from that page post in comments or link back to your updates on what you think of the book. Would you continue reading based only on the page 99 test?

Post your link in comments to your blog or wherever you’re doing your updates so we can all enjoy! And better yet, tell us about your page 99! But don’t forget to finish the form below if you want in on the Giveaway! Choose the book you’re interested in and the top person for each book  (selected by random.org) will be notified at the end of the RaT! Good luck guys!

My page 99 for Patient Zero by Jonahon Maberry:

Freaking amazing! I have been putting off this book, for well, months actually MONTHS. And here is this simple test I could have done ages ago to see if I actually would turn to page 100 and you know what, I totally would! My favorite paragraph of page 99:

I did not and do not want my life tied up in cloak-and-dagger bullshit, dead guy, or pissing contents with either the testosterone crowd in there or some prissy-assed Earl Grey-drinking, scone-munching  major who isn’t even my freaking boss. I dont’ know you and I don’t give a rat’s ass if you trust me.– Page 99  of Patient Zero

About the books:

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak — It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul. — Goodreads

Halo by Alexandra Adornetto — Three angels – Gabriel, the warrior; Ivy, the healer; and Bethany, the youngest and most human – are sent by Heaven to bring good to a world falling under the influence of darkness. They work hard to conceal their luminous glow, superhuman powers, and, most dangerous of all, their wings, all the while avoiding all human attachments.

Then Bethany meets Xavier Woods, and neither of them is able to resist the attraction between them. Gabriel and Ivy do everything in their power to intervene, but the bond between Xavier and Bethany seems too strong.

The angel’s mission is urgent, and dark forces are threatening. Will love ruin Bethany or save her? — Goodreads

Dangerous to Know by Tasha Alexander — Set in the lush countryside of Normandy, France, this new novel of suspense featuring Lady Emily Hargreaves is filled with intrigue, romance, mysterious deaths, and madness.

Returning from her honeymoon with Colin Hargreaves and a near brush with death in Constantinople, Lady Emily convalesces at her mother-in-law’s beautiful estate in Normandy. But the calm she so desperately seeks is shattered when, out riding a horse, she comes upon the body of a young woman who has been brutally murdered. The girl’s wounds are identical to those inflicted on the victims of Jack the Ripper, who has wreaked havoc across the channel in London. Emily feels a connection to the young woman and is determined to bring the killer to justice.

Pursuing a trail of clues and victims to the beautiful medieval city of Rouen and a crumbling chateau in the country, Emily begins to worry about her own sanity: she hears the cries of a little girl she cannot find and discovers blue ribbons left in the child’s wake. As Emily is forced to match wits with a brilliant and manipulative killer, only her courage, keen instincts and formidable will to win can help her escape becoming his next victim. — Goodreads

  1. […] Firstly only 5 books read so far this month! I knew I was feeling a little behind, but no worries. High Summer Read a Thon starts tomorrow and I’m super excited to get another 4 (ish) read! Hopefully! Secondly, whew! […]

  2. Ok, I gave this a shot. The second book on my list for the read-a-thon is “Or Perish in the Attempt: Winderness Medicine in the Lewis & Clark Expedition” by David J. Peck. Page 99 was so disappointing – a rather dull account of Clark’s 34th birthday and the Corps’ first diplomatic encounter with American Indians. Where is the medicine? I want my medical history! So I cheated and randomly flipped to page 177 where I was rewarded with a delightful bit where Clark takes a lethal dose of calomel (a mercury compound) in an attempt to cure fever and constipation. Fortunately it worked quite well on the constipation, and so likely passed right through him before a dangerous amount could be absorbed. This is the sort of thing that makes a pharmacist want to read on! Birthday party schmirthday party, I want more about the poison they were passing off as medication in those days.

    1. I felt the same about another page 99 in a book that I’m loving but was surprised with the outcome to Patient Zero! That one really made me want to read on but sadly I have to start the book first! I’m glad you got the medical history that you were looking for, even if it wasn’t on page 99! 😀 That sounds like an amazing book by the way. I hope you enjoy it.

      1. Thanks! I think I will. We’re going on a Lewis & Clark cultural tour for vacation in August and I’m hoping to get some pre-trip reading in during the read-a-thon. Hope you get to start Patient Zero soon!

      2. Oh wow! That sounds exciting! I love that kind of thing but most of it goes over my head. I have a friend that I discuss all kinds of medical stuff with and she just laughs at me. I will start reading soon but I’m going to the bookstore first! Of course!

I have to admit, I stalked you a little, or more like I stalked Sheridan!! He is super adorable! Were those puppy pictures? And what is he!? We have a Collie/German Sherpherd mix and he looked a lot like that but more Collie markings. Lots of brown on his nose and ears. My first big dog that is a lap puppy! He’s like 75 lbs now!

      3. Nope, those are all grown-up pictures of Sheridan. We adopted him when he was 1-2 years old, so we’re not sure what he looked like as a puppy. I’m sure he was completely adorable, of course! He’s mostly Sheltie, probably with something else mixed in but we’re not sure what that might be. Someone just left him tied up outside the animal shelter where we volunteer, so we don’t know his history.

You have to love 75 pound lap dogs! My grandmother had a Great Pyrenees who would just back up to the couch and sit on her lap. He was about twice her size but still thought he was a puppy.

      4. I soooo want one! Even though my big boy is a Collie look alike with German Shepherd markings so I have a Collie, sort of. But Shelties! They just steal my heart! ❤

Great Pyrenees. I'll have to look that guy up! Sounds huge. We have the big guy that I talked about, a Weimaraner and a pug mix. All lap dogs and bed hogs! If you can imagine. Actually don't. It's a mess. 😉

  3. Good luck!! I’ve never read anything by King, but I loved Soulless.

    1. Thank you! I’m still only on page 100 but I knew today was going to be busy. Tonight is going to be a coffee and snuggle with Soulless kind of night though! Actually I’m super psyched already about that series. It’s just so much fun to read! I’m already in love with the characters!

Good luck to you as well. I love the colors on your blog by the way!

  4. […] Nova @ My Seryniti presents a challenge Based on Page 99 Test  – What’s the Page 99 Test? Go to page 99 […]

  5. I read page 99 of In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson. The page is correspondence between Rabbi Wise and American ambassador to Germany, William Dodd. Dodd reassures Wise that policy will be softening in regards to the mistreatment of Jews. Wise believes that Dodd is being lied to. And I believe that this will possibly be my next read.

And of course now I want to pick up my favorite books and see if page 99 is good or not. 😉

    1. I started doing the exact same thing! Some were just ok, some blew me away! Fun little trick. I saw that you were planning on reading Garden of Beasts. Sounds like I book I would like. I can’t want to see what you think. Please let me know!

  6. You do have a great list lined up. Love the scary! How long do we have to do the mini-challenge? Is it open all week? I’m so behind today, I won’t be able to get to it until tomorrow…hopefully! Thanks again for hosting it. You’re awesome! I hope you enjoy the read-a-thon this week. 🙂

    1. My pleasure! I’m having a blast and actually got a little reading in as well. 😀

And yes, all week. I’ll make sure to post that somewhere!

    1. YAY! I’m glad you liked! Of course, I can not take the credit. Wish I could. 😉

  7. Very cool mini-challenge – it’s not one I’ve ever come across before, and what a good idea for sorta finding out if a book’s for you or not! I chose THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER and wrote about it in my read-a-thon post here: http://musingsofabookshopgirl.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/high-summer-read-thon-starts-here.html

Thanks for the giveaway – and happy reading this week!

    1. Oh! I have yet to read that book but my daughter fell IN LOVE with it. I do believe it’s her favorite! She keeps yelling at me to read it. I hope you enjoy!

  8. Thank you for this! It was a lot of fun!
I read pg 99 of “Cinder” by Marissa Meyer. My entry can be found here:

  9. […] High Summer Read a Thon all! Looks like everyone was off to a great start! The mini challenge was a blast, thank you for all that participated! It will be open all week so if you haven’t […]

  10. Page 99 of my book definitely piqued my interest. Here is my post for it here: http://bippityboppitybook.blogspot.com/2012/07/read-thon-mini-challenges.html

    1. My pleasure! I had a ton of fun! Now to just find more time to read!!

  11. I posted the mini challenge in my update. Make sure you try out my mini challenge if you have time. I read page 99 of The Homecoming of Samuel Lake. So good.

    1. I loved your challenge! I had already found a picture of a sunset while reading Soulless. It’s for a fabulously dressed vampire in there who I just fell in love with. 😀

  12. I flipper to page 99 in Evil Eternal by Hunter Shea though I am already reading it. Even if I hadn’t already started it this page would pique my interest about the book. Someone is researching Michael as an archangel in pursuit of another mystery. Probably having to do with a demon! What a great test!! On another note…I love the Gunslinger series by King. I also have Soulless and all that follow but have yet to read. Thanks for hosting the challenge!!!! 🙂

    1. My pleasure! I’m so glad you enjoyed the challenge. I am doing that with every book I pick up now. 😉

I didn’t start the Gunslinger series yet. It’s yelling at me, and so is my hubby. LOL. I did get three books read and two others started so I still feel good.
