Synopsis:
Mark Inman has two loves: particle physics and Sarah. She agrees to become his wife at the same time his experiment to find the Higgs boson goes off the rails.
Journey with Mark while his existence melts and reforms in unpredictable ways as the veils between realities thin. His exploration of the minutiae of quantum physics builds a fascinating tapestry of alternate universes.
His search for survival, and the search for meaning and what is real, drive Mark as he experiences lives he never dreamed possible. His only touchstones: find Sarah and find his way home.
My Thoughts:
This is such a hard book to judge! It was very outside of my box, but in a good, really interesting way. Tonya was able to take some of the things that I find interesting about spirituality and science and put them together in a brilliant written and pretty fast book. The prologue lets us know quickly that something is definitely going on and it’s going to be weird, to say the least! How weird though?! I have to say, Tonya’s imagination at the alternate realities is astounding, she does a great job of making us realize the difficulties of being subjected to such horrors. And the simple matter of the fact that Mark finds Sarah in each of these realities and in all of them he loves her. It’s heart breaking and interesting all at the same time.
I absolutely love how Mark deals with these situations. He at first faints but soon he begins to look at things scientifically. He’s a scientist so this completely makes sense. Although I also find myself thinking about life like a scientist but I’m telling you guys if I woke as I lizard I would not be able to hold my composure! But he is seriously a strong character mentally and intelligently tries to find ways out of each existence.
Sarah is also a fabulous character. You can tell she loves him greatly even in the different realities. It’s fabulous way to think of soul mates. He finds her no matter where he is. Then there’s a few minor characters like Richards and Logan that make a difference in their lives also. But Logan is definitely my favorite. He’s quirky, intelligent, energetic and fun. He’s the kind of person you want around no matter what existence you’re in!
The only downside to this book is that although I’m sure Tonya probably used layman terms, these scientific terms still went way over my head. Plus I felt at the end like things didn’t get resolved. I’m not sure how things happened. It’s a great book though so I will reread so I can see if I missed something.
I definitely recommend this to anyone with an open mind. It’s a pretty easy read although Tonya’s vocabulary is fantastic! I love reading books where I have to look up words, but even with only being 196 pages it took me a little bit longer because of the scientific jargon. She also manages to add in a touch of spirituality. And not the overwhelming kind. She intersperses great thoughts with some massive issues about what we really believe about life. It’s seriously intriguing to say the least! So, yes easy read but also thought provoking!
My favorite part of his realities:
I couldn’t even grumble. Here, again, I lacked vocal capacity. I would never again (if I had the chance) take the ability to express words for granted. I could blow bubbles like a champion, though. So I did. Someone had to be out there to understand I was mad. In all senses of the expression!
The bubbles muddied the waters and calmed down the crazy sensory input, and I could see there might be something tasty, dead ahead. This was weird. This body was more instinctual than I was used to. It darted forward, snapped its jaws, and swallowed, At least I didn’t have to taste whatever raw, live being my mouth had just encased. If I thought about it too much, I would likely throw it back up, regardless of what this beast thought. Sushi. It was sushi. I could live with that. — Page 112
Oh and seriously… how gorgeous is that cover!? One of the best I’ve seen this year!
