The book follows the siblings as they are dropped off at their new guardian’s home, an ancient and creepy mansion known only as the Belmonte Estate. Here they unravel the secrets of their parent’s true identities, the origin of the mysterious Mansion, and their inheritance into an ancient secret society of monster hunters known as Seekers.”

My thoughts:

It starts off with the children’s parents dying and them having to enter a very scary looking castle. They are both so brilliantly written, young and curious about the world around them, yet hurting after their parents death. It’s a great beginning and a good way to get to know the characters.

My favorite was the world that J L Hickey creates. You are taken into this mansion along with Hunter and Elly and you’re left wondering what is going on, just as they are. And as you get to “see” more of what’s going on around them, the anticipation and eagerness builds. As does the plot, which was very well done. This could have easily been a bit convoluted but Hickey keeps things simple, but doesn’t dumb down to readers.

As I said, the characters are great. Hunter is an amazing albeit a bit mischievous, big brother. But Margot is the one who really caught me. She is just so much fun! And if I didn’t already have four dogs, I would seriously want to adopt Trayer! The one person I really want to learn more about is Professor Calenstine.

Interesting plot, amazing imagery, really good characters that you can’t wait to see more of. I definitely suggest picking this up especially if you’re sad that Harry Potter is gone. Don’t let this title fool you, this book is in no way convoluted, just fantastically strange and wonderful.
