Synopsis:Betwixt

‘Beautiful, wild-child Nicole Tepper is hit by a car and left for dead. But when she wakes the next morning, Nicole finds herself in bed without a scratch. Perhaps she was more intoxicated than usual, as her mother is giving her the silent treatment and her friends are ignoring her as well.

Things take a turn for the weird when Nicole soon discovers she is actually hovering between life and death. Her body is lying in the forest while her spirit is searching for anyone who can hear her. Unfortunately the only person who can is Dale Finnigan, the guy she publicly humiliated with a sharp-tongued insult that has left him branded.

Desperate, Nicole has no choice but to haunt Dale and convince the freaked-out senior to help her. Will he find her body before it’s too late? Or will the guy who tried to kill her with his car, beat him there and finish her off before anyone finds out?”

My thoughts:

Ok, wow. This started great and never let up. The beginning was really good although I was a bit distressed that the lead character was in a precarious position and also pretty young. Melissa does explain throughout the book why Nicole is hurting herself but man, it’s hard to read about! Not in a “the book was difficult” not at all! In a, wow this poor girl is really messed up. You do find out why and it completely makes sense but if you’re empathetic and a mother this may pull at your heart strings!

Ohhh! And speaking of parents!! Argh! Nicky’s parents are nonexistent! I mean not literally but they may have been! I wanted to kick them. And the choices they make. I realize they are upset and again Melissa explains all of this in a great way so you completely understand why they make the choices they do, but my god!! The only person in this book who is even halfway sane is Dale. And it seems to reason that I absolutely love that guy!

How would I act if I started hearing ghosts? I’m not really sure but Dale sure does hold it together! He deserves some kind of award. And you think that Nicky has put him through some stuff prior to being hit by a car, oh boy… I’ll just say he goes through a LOT for her.

In other words, I loved this book. The characters are really believable, the plot did NOT let up. Actually it got so intense that I was literally sitting straight up wondering what in the HELL WAS GOING to happen!!! It was one of those books where my hubby would talk and I just could not answer him. All he got was a flip of the hand and a shush!! It is that intense. But at the same time, and this is going to sound weird, it was easy and fun to read also! Maybe because I wanted Nicole to pull through so badly! Maybe because Melissa’s writing is just that good. Maybe because the characters pull you into the story and you yell at them like this was your own daughter that is missing. It’s probably all of the above though and I loved every minute of it!
