Apocalypse Z

My thoughts:

I’m so super excited, and totally freaked out of my mind right now! I love horror, L O V E it! This is horrific in every sense of the word. My heart was palpitating! I even had to put the book down a few times to get my breath and to pretend to blog so I had a reason to walk away! I know… absurd but totally true.

Someone has opened the gates of hell, and you can feel the heat.

Ok, this starts off like any zombiepocalypse but I was a little frustrated that the main character was given pretty much everything he needed right off the bat. Now I’m not talking everything for all of time but for instance the power was shotty and went out so he decided to get solar panels, he only shops a few times a month so he decided to pack up on food, little things like that. Now these things could really happen but I started feeling like the author was giving the main character everything. That’s no fun! Oh but just wait…

First of all this is all written from a blog. Once you get over the fact that he’s sort of given the necessary things for a few days the intensity starts to pick up. It’s not exactly slow, it’s the perfect heart wrenching pace, like the music in jaws. It starts getting to you. What can happen next? And then after that? And then you’re asking yourself ok, if this guy is still blogging he HAS to live through the entire thing right? But then I started thinking, oh crap someone could have found this blog and continued with THEIR story. Screw that, I don’t want this author to die. He loves his cat! It’s the zombiepocalypse and he’s saving his cat for goodness sake! I love this guy!

Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam! Then suddenly the noise stopped. Then it started up again, with those damn bells in the background. It was maddening.

The noise was coming from the floor I was on, not downstairs. From the back of the house. I could have ignored it and gone downstairs, looted what I needed, and left the way I came in. But I’m human. Besides being irrational, stupid, and unpredictable, humans are really curious. I needed to know what the hell was making that noise. Shaking, scared, shitless, holding the Glock in my right hand and the flashlight in my left, I walked to the other end of the house.

Seriously, one thing after another happens, over and over and over again. The only other thing that frustrated me was that he continues to say that he got overconfident right before he screws up for say the tenth time! You want to tell him, Hello! These are zombies! No screwing around allowed. Haven’t you seen Zombieland?! But no, he hasn’t. The way this all started nobody knew anything and certainly didn’t think they were zombies, gotta love our government covering stuff up cause I’m telling you, if there ever are zombies, it’s going down like in this book, all to cover up mistakes! Ok… back to the book!

We’re screwed. We’re alone. All alone.

Amazing! Other than the couple of issues I had with the author of the blog and then journal, the intensity gets so ratcheted up that I literally didn’t want to stop reading! Last night I had nightmares about zombies eating off my face! File that under awesome… It was brilliantly written and ended fantastically. It is the first of three (I believe) books but they are in Spanish so I have to wait for them to be translated to read them!!! Oy… or learn how to speak and read Spanish…

If you like zombies, you will absolutely love this book. It’s intense but the ride is so worth it. I read that Manel Loureiro is called The Spanish Stephen King and after reading this, I completely agree. I’m a new fan!!! This is like the child between Dawn of the Dead and Zombieland but in book form. It’s a MUST read!

  3. Holy wow, batman! I’m in love with this author and his ingenuity; from the toy bear strapped to the speargun to figuring out who Pritchenko is to what he’ll do for Lucullus, it never lets up!! Headed back to the Zaren Kibish now, hopefully he kicks some arse and gets his furry friend back!

What a wonderful read! I am frustrated because there are 3 books in this series and only the first is English-translated.

    1. Omg! It’s amazing!! Super scary parts in this one. Totally realistic. The beginning was the only hiccup I had but the main character had to have a way to survive the first few weeks, so other than that… amazing!!

  10. Just finished this yesterday, quite the fun read!
There’s also Day By Day Armageddon (and its sequel, Day By Day Armageddon: Beyond Exile) from J.L.Bourne. Bourne is an active military officer, so his writing is a lot more sparse, utilitarian, and tactical, lending itself to very action-focused prose. Similar to Apocalypse Z, it’s written as a first person journal, but is a lot less sentimental and emotional. Different style, but just as delicious to devour.

    1. Ohhh!!! Thank you for that! I’ll have to look it up! 😀
