Synopsis:

Azalea and her younger sisters dance in the mysterious silver forest every night, escaping from the sadness of the palace and their father’s grief. What they don’t understand—although as time passes they begin to get an inkling of the danger they are in—is that the mysterious and dashing Keeper is tightening his snare with deadly purpose. Luckily, Azalea is brave and steadfast. Luckily, a handsome young army captain also has his eye on Azalea. . . . Lush, romantic, and compelling, this debut novel by Heather Dixon will thrill fans of Shannon Hale, Robin McKinley, and Edith Pattou.

My thoughts:

A wonderfully orchestrated book full of fabulous turns and dips, just like the dances that Heather Dixon adds. It is marvelous how the plot comes together and although you pretty much can tell who the bad guy is going to be and how things are going to end up, you don’t know HOW they are going to end up the way they do. Which makes this a fantastically magical read.

Being young adult I assumed that it was going to be easy to read and it was. I flew through the 472 pages in a day. Honestly it was hard to put this one down. There was drama after drama but nothing seemed out of place. The girls, quite a few of them, were all different ages and all had different temperaments and reactions to the things the King, their father, did. Azalea had the most stubborn attitude of them all, but after their mother dying she also had to watch over her sisters. A promise she made to her mother, on silver. Heather Dixon doesn’t quite get to explaining why the silver is so important other than one important reason, which I won’t give away here! Azalea, trying to live up to the promise she made, literally causes havoc in the household.

The character arc, which I never enjoy reading by the way, was fantastic. Actually, it did seem like the girls and their father learned throughout the entire process, which is what really mirrors real life and what makes this book so remarkable. And each thing that they go through is believable and the lessons the characters learn are as well.

Honestly, I’ve had this book on my to be read list for quite some time. I bought it mainly for the cover because it is just brilliant and I am glad that I finally got around to reading it. It’s a fabulous bit of fun with lots of drama thrown in, wonderful characters and magic to sum it all together.

Do you have books sitting on your shelves for what seems like years, that you haven’t read yet?
